Turkey bacon is harder to find. It usually contains additional ingredients that don`t work. That being said, I don`t really eat much pork, so after many years of dieting, when I started adding other foods, I switched to turkey bacon most of the time. Just like regular bacon, I buy unhardened turkey bacon with few ingredients. It`s more expensive, but I prefer it to normal ones. If you follow SCD 100%, you probably won`t be able to make turkey bacon. Let me know if you try this homemade bacon at your next brunch or breakfast! Most vinegars are legal, with the exception of balsamic vinegar (except homemade; some recipes exist online). BTVC also listed them and I also made this handy table.
Note that my edition of BTVC listed Gruyère as illegal, but I`ve heard that later editions don`t, so I`ll leave it to you to do that. Do not use commercial products containing additives, preservatives, sugar and other illegal sickle cell foods. Finding bacon that is completely SCD-friendly is difficult. One thing I always pay attention to is buying unhardened bacon. Nitrates are bad and can cause stomach upset. Most unhardened bacon contains sugar, but I didn`t find it to be a problem for me. Eggs are a staple of sickle cell disease and are allowed in any form as long as you don`t add any illegal ingredients to them. I eat eggs quite often – I love making a scrambled egg for dinner. I don`t have much more to say about eggs, except that they`re great for sickle cell disease. It`s easy to sometimes forget which ones are acceptable and which aren`t. No products derived from these grains (such as pasta, cereals, crackers, bread, other baked goods and many vegetarian meat alternatives). This could mean not being able to eat foods other than the ones you prepare for yourself for a while. I recommend doing this until the symptoms are gone. The reason for this is that even seemingly simple things can contain many additional ingredients. I can`t tell you how many times I`ve been offered “simple” fried chicken. “Where does it come from?” I will ask the question. Carrageenan guar agar and gum, potato flour, rice flour and sorghum flour are not allowed. Sometimes I also add honey to the mix, but I don`t always do that. However, you can definitely experiment with the range of spices.
